Direct Answer: Yes, the Rename Is Official
The Ocean Explorer Map is now called the Ocean Monument Map in both Java Edition 26.3 and Bedrock Edition 26.60. This is part of a broader rename of all explorer maps to more clearly indicate the structure they lead to.
26.3 Snapshot 10 (known as 26.3-snapshot-10 in the launcher) is the tenth and final snapshot for Java Edition 26.3, released on August 25, 2026, which changes the panorama for the Wilderness Bound drop, renames explorer maps, improves performance, and fixes bugs.
26.60, also known as 1.26.60, is an upcoming minor update for Bedrock Edition set to release on October 27, 2026, which adds experimental features for the fourth drop of 2026 and fixes bugs.
Complete List of Explorer Map Name Changes in 2026

| Ocean Explorer Map | Ocean Monument Map |
| Jungle Explorer Map | Jungle Pyramid Map |
| Swamp Explorer Map | Swamp Hut Map |
| Trial Explorer Map | Buried Trial Chambers Map |
| Woodland Explorer Map | Woodland Mansion Map |
The names above are taken directly from the official changelogs for both editions.
How to Get an Ocean Monument Map After the Update
You obtain the map the same way as before: trade with an Apprentice-level cartographer villager. The item now displays "Ocean Monument Map" in its tooltip. The map functions identically—it reveals the location of a nearby ocean monument. For strategies on defeating the elder guardian and looting the monument safely in hardcore mode, see our guide on How to Defeat Every Minecraft Boss in Hardcore Mode (2026).
If you already have an old Explorer Map in your inventory, its display name will update when you reload the world in the new version.
Why the Name Change?
Mojang renamed these maps to improve clarity. "Ocean Explorer Map" was vague—players might not know it pointed specifically to an ocean monument rather than a general ocean structure. The new naming pattern matches the other explorer maps and makes it immediately obvious what you’re seeking. This change applies to all explorer maps obtained from cartographers after the update.

How do I get an Ocean Monument Map after the update?
Trade with an apprentice-level cartographer villager. The map will now be called Ocean Monument Map, but the trade recipe is unchanged.
