The Minecraft 1.9 Combat Update, released on February 29, 2016, fundamentally rewrote the rules of engagement. If you took a break after 1.8 and came back, the way you swing a sword, block attacks, and explore the End all changed. Here's a quick reference to the biggest shifts.

How the Attack Cooldown Changed Melee Combat

Before 1.9, you could click as fast as your finger allowed. The update introduced an attack cooldown mechanic, which forces a short delay between swings. Your weapon must recharge to deal full damage; attacking too early results in a weak hit.

This completely changed PvE and PvP. You now need to time your strikes. Swords have a shorter cooldown than axes, but axes deal higher burst damage. The cooldown bar appears as a small indicator above the hotbar.

Shields: The New Defensive Staple

Shields were added as a craftable item that can block incoming damage when held in the off-hand or main hand. They block melee attacks, arrows, and even projectiles like fireballs.

Shields, spectral arrows, 14 types of tipped arrows and a lingering potion for each type of potion.

Axes can temporarily disable a shield if used with enough force, making them a counter-weapon in combat. For more on using axes against shielded enemies, check out our guide on How to Use the Axe in Minecraft Boss Fights.

Dual Wielding and the Off-Hand Slot

The update introduced an off-hand slot, allowing you to hold a second item simultaneously. This enables you to hold a shield while swinging a sword, or carry a torch in your off-hand while mining.

"Off-hand" slot for dual wielding.

You can also configure your dominant hand in settings, which determines which hand swings the primary weapon.

The End Overhaul: Beyond the Dragon

The End received a massive expansion. The dragon fight was updated to match Legacy Console Edition with a re-summoning mechanic using End Crystals.

The End was overhauled with an updated ender dragon boss fight sequence matching Legacy Console Edition, an expanse of additional islands with chorus plants, End cities, End ships, purpur blocks, shulkers, as well as elytra, which a player can wear to glide through the air.

After defeating the dragon, you can access infinite outer End islands via End gateways. These islands contain End cities with shulkers, elytra, and chorus plants. You can also re-summon the dragon by placing four End Crystals on the exit portal. For a full breakdown of new dragon fight strategies, see How the Combat Update Changed Ender Dragon Strategies.

New Weapons and Arrows

Beyond shields, the Combat Update added spectral arrows (which outline targets) and 14 types of tipped arrows, each carrying a status effect. Lingering potions were also introduced, creating area-effect clouds. These additions gave archers much more tactical variety.
